Peru Trekking Packing List

In this essential guide, you will find all the necessary items and a breakdown of key elements based on the season and the region of the country.

Peru Trek Packing List

You’ve decided to join us for an unforgettable trekking adventure through the Peruvian Andes!

Before hitting the trail, it’s important to make sure you have everything you need for a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable experience. From essential hiking gear and suitable clothing to sun protection and personal items, being well-prepared will help you make the most of every step of your journey.

Our Peru Trekking Packing List is designed to help you prepare for your adventure with confidence. Whether you’re exploring the spectacular Ausangate mountains, hiking to Rainbow Mountain, or discovering the ancient trails of the Peruvian Andes, this guide covers the essential items you should bring.

We’ve organized our recommendations to make packing simple and stress-free, focusing on practical, reliable gear suited to Peru’s high-altitude conditions and changing mountain weather. Use this checklist to prepare for your trek and focus on what matters most: enjoying the incredible landscapes, local culture, and unforgettable experiences that Peru has to offer.

passport

Original Passport

Carry your passport when hiking in Peru, as it may be required at trail checkpoints and for entry to Machu Picchu and other locations. Ensure that the details on your tickets match those in your passport exactly.

backpack

Backpack

Bring a daypack where you can store water, snacks, sunscreen, and essentials. Choose one that features compression straps and side pockets. Always carry a waterproof cover to protect your belongings in the Andes.

hiking poles

Trekking Poles

Trekking poles reduce pressure on your knees and joints, especially during descents. Choose lightweight, adjustable poles for comfort and easy storage. Black Diamond and Leki are excellent options.

sunglasses

Sunglasses

The intensity of ultraviolet radiation in Cusco, Peru, is very high due to the high altitude and the glare from snow-capped peaks.
You should wear quality sunglasses with UV protection (reducing light by at least 80%).

flashlight

Flashlight

You won’t be hiking at night, but you might need to use the restroom in the dark or want to read before going to sleep. Many campsites are poorly lit or lack electricity entirely, so having extra lighting comes in very handy.

bottle

Water Bottle

Many people suffer from dehydration at high altitudes. Ideally, you should drink between 2 and 3 liters of water a day. Heatstroke is common among dehydrated hikers and could prevent you from completing the rest of the hike.

hiking-shoes

Hiking Boots

Choose well-fitting, waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support to prevent blisters and foot pain. Ensure there is enough room for your toes, especially when descending, and break in your boots before the trek.

sleeping

Sleeping Bag

Bring a warm sleeping bag rated for temperatures of at least -10°C, as temperatures can drop below freezing. Choose a mummy-style model with an insulated hood to better retain heat; both down and synthetic options are suitable.

hat

Hat for Sun Protection

For hiking, wear a lightweight, packable hat or cap that protects your face and neck from intense high-altitude UV rays. A hat with a neck flap offers additional sun protection.

neck

Balaclava

Bring two neck gaiters (Buff-style): one fleece-lined and one lightweight. They can protect your face and neck from the cold and be worn as a headband, hat, or neck gaiter.

poncho

Rain Gear

Bring a waterproof, breathable jacket to effectively protect yourself from rain and wind during your hikes in Peru, especially during the rainy season. It is also useful to carry a lightweight waterproof poncho for sudden downpours.

jackets

Insulated Jacket

The outer layer—or third layer—consists of a jacket and trousers that are windproof, water-resistant, and, most importantly, warm. These garments will be worn on the upper sections, where it is very cold.

camera

Camera

The landscape of Cusco, Peru, is breathtaking! You’ll undoubtedly want to capture your experience in high definition, so if you don’t have a decent camera, now is the time to get one to capture every moment.

socks

Thermal Socks

Bring one or two pairs of thermal socks for cold days of hiking at higher altitudes.
We recommend Smartwool thermal socks, as they are very warm and offer excellent cushioning for the feet (bulky seams cause blisters).

trekking

Trekking Pants

You also need to bring both shorts and long pants for hiking. You can opt for convertible pants, like this trekking model; the lightest ones are more comfortable for walking.

sun-screem

Sunscreen

Bring broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 50+) to protect your skin from intense UV rays at high altitudes. Reapply every two hours and after sweating to maintain protection during your trek.

medication

Personal Medicine

Bring your personal medications and any essential prescription medicines you may need during the trek. Keep them in their original packaging and carry enough for the entire trip, plus a little extra in case of delays.

moneys

Cash in Soles

Carry enough cash in Peruvian soles (PEN) for snacks, drinks, tips, and small purchases during the hike, as credit cards are not accepted in many rural areas; however, you can use cards in the cities.

Personal Gear and Medication

  • Swimsuit: If you plan to visit the Aguas Calientes hot springs or swim along the route.
  • Trekking Towel: A small, quick-drying towel for personal hygiene.
  • Cash: Bring S/300–S/400 for snacks, water, small purchases, and emergencies.
  • Toilet Paper: Most toilets along the route do not provide it.
  • Portable Power Bank: Keep your phone, camera, and other devices charged.
  • Small Locks: Secure your belongings in your duffel bag or backpack.
  • Waterproof Ziplock Bags: Protect your passport, money, and electronic devices from moisture.
  • Electrolyte Powder: Helps replace electrolytes lost through sweating during physical activity.
  • Diamox (Acetazolamide): A medication sometimes used to prevent altitude sickness. Consult a healthcare professional before use.
  • Personal Medications: Bring any necessary medicines prescribed by your healthcare professional.
  • Basic First Aid Kit: Useful for treating minor injuries, especially when trekking independently.
  • Sunscreen and Lip Balm: Bring SPF 50+ sunscreen and lip balm to protect against intense sunlight and dry conditions.
  • Insect Repellent: Protect yourself from biting insects, especially near Machu Picchu.
  • Baby Wipes or Body Wipes: Useful for personal hygiene when showers are unavailable.
  • Blister Plasters: Help protect your feet and manage blisters during long hikes.
  • Hand Sanitizer: Clean your hands before meals and after using the bathroom.

Great, reliable Local company! We did the Ausangate trek with Perutrek and had an excellent experience from start to finish. Communication was smooth the entire time. They were very responsive and easy to deal with, and they also offered the best price compared to other companies we looked at. The trek itself was amazing. Transportation was comfortable, and our guide Cecelio was one of the best we have had in Peru. He was very knowledgeable, supportive, and always looking out for the group. When I started feeling altitude sickness, they handled it really well by providing oxygen and arranging an emergency horse, which was included. The food was another highlight. The chef prepared some of the best meals we have had on any trek. Overall, I would 100% recommend Perutrek. They are local, professional, and very reliable.

“Whispers of the Andes — A Journey with Peru Trek "There are trips you take, and then there are journeys that touch your soul — Peru Trek gave me the latter. From the first step on the mountain trails to the quiet dawn over the Andes, everything felt like poetry written by nature itself. Our guide was more than just a professional; he was a storyteller, a friend, and a calm spirit who made every path feel safe and meaningful. Each sunrise felt like a blessing, and each shared laugh along the trail turned into a lasting memory. Peru Trek isn’t just about trekking — it’s about feeling the heartbeat of Peru through every step, every view, and every smile. I left with tired feet but a full heart, grateful for an experience that felt timeless and beautifully human. 🌄💫"

Amazing 3 day Ausangate hike We had such an amazing experience with Cecilio on our 3 day Ausangate hike! It turned out to be a private tour for the two of us, all taken care off by Cecilio as the guide and his chef and horseman. They do everything to make you feel comfortable and to have the best experience. Cecilio speaks fluent English and is very easy going and professional at the same time. He adjust to your pace and often walks behind so you can set your own pace. He knows how to balance his involvement and give you privacy. We learned so much about the landscape, the culture and local way of life. The hike itself was incredible with the most beautiful scenery. The conditions were extreme with freezing nights, snow, hail, rain, but also plenty of sunshine. We barely saw other people on our hikes wich contributes to the adventure. The rainbow mountain was very busy with all the group tours. If these people only knew the true beauty of the region is actually right around the corner! For us this 3 day tour was the ideal length. It's a great alternative for the Huaraz region which is very remote or even Patagonia. And if you decide to go, you won't regret going with Cecilio and his Peru Trek crew!
